Citizen Action/ Illinois Calls for Medicare Price Negotiations

Rockford, IL– On April 3, Citizen Action/IL and IARA stood with local seniors at a press conference to demand Congress lift the prohibition on Medicare price negotiations.  The press event was held at the historic Booker Washington Community Center in Rockford Illinois.  The groups announced their support for Senator Rockefeller's legislation to allow negotiations, which could save Illinois close to $3 Billion over ten years.  Also, they committed to keep the pressure on Congressional members in the area.

[Springfield, IL] – On Thursday, February 21, Citizen Action/Illinois joined with the Illinois Alliance for Retired Americans, Illinois AFL-CIO, the Coalition for Citizens with Disabilities, NAACP and Action NOW for a press conference outside the Springfield office of Senator Mark Kirk.  Speakers highlighted the impact of $85 billion in across-the-board program cuts scheduled to take effect March 1 if Congress doesn’t resolve the debate over the budget sequester.

Medicaid Expansion in Illinois

On February 5th, Medicaid expansion legislation (SB26) moved out of committee in the Illinois Senate.  SB26 is a critical component of the Affordable Care Act.  It is designed to get Illinois’ uninsured into the main-stream health care system.

Support SB26: A New Medicaid Opportunity for Illinois

SB26 would allow for 342,000 low-income adults in Illinois to be newly eligible for and enrolled in Medicaid over the next four years. Coverage for those who enroll would start on Jan 1, 2014. Enrollment starts Oct 2013.

SB26 includes language that would cease coverage for this new population if the federal government’s share of Medicaid matching funds drops below 90%. The federal government pays 100% of the costs of the newly eligible from 2014 through 2016.

A key component of President Obama’s “Affordable Care Act” (ACA) is the expansion of federal Medicaid benefits to low-income individuals that currently fall into the “coverage gap.”

In order to achieve real cost savings in health care spending and help bring our nation closer to universal coverage, the ACA needed to address the question of how to help the working poor obtain coverage without creating a new financial burden on those that could not afford it.
