CA/IL Honors Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. with Lerner/Egan Award

On September 14, 2012, Citizen Action/Illinois was proud to honor Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr., founder and President of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, with the 2012 Louis A. Lerner/Monsignor John "Jack" Egan Distinguished Service Award for a lifetime of dedication to the public interest. The evening's keynote address was given by Heather Booth, founder and President of the Midwest Academy and a national progressive leader.

Each election cycle, Citizen Action’s political action committee convenes to make endorsements for public office.  Candidates who wish to be endorsed by the organization are required to complete a questionnaire which outlines the broad policy positions taken by Citizen Action/Illinois.  In the case of incumbents, Citizen Action will also consider their score on our Legislative Scorecard (click here for Citizen Action/Illinois 2012 Illinois Legislature Scorecard).

On Thursday June 28, Over 150 people gathered in 100-degree heat in Chicago's Daley Plaza praising the Supreme Court ruling as a profound victory for American consumers. With this seminal Supreme Court decision, the constitutional debate over the law ended and the quest toward affordable and accessible healthcare moved triumphantly forward. Healthcare advocates said that 30 million more Americans can now be covered and that the worst insurance company abuses will become a relic of the past.

In the wake its the failure to recall Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker last month, numerous pundits have once again declared that the American labor movement is doomed.  The line goes that organized labor has lost its political clout and its declining membership in the private sector means it is headed for the dustbin of history.

Yet, as Mark Twain would have said, the rumors of labor’s death are greatly exaggerated.
