Citizen Action/Illinois introduces the Illinois Coalition to Strengthen Social Security

Date:
08/24/2010

Both Citizen Action/Illinois and the Illinois Alliance for Retired Americans are thrilled to announce the formation of the Illinois Coalition to Strengthen Social Security.

Social Security belongs to the people who have worked hard all their lives and contributed to it. Social Security is a promise that must not be broken. If you pay in, then you earn the right to benefits for yourself, your spouse and your dependent children when you retire, experience a severe disability, or die.

We need to strengthen Social Security, not cut it. That is why we oppose any cuts to Social Security benefits, including increasing the retirement age. We also oppose any effort to privatize Social Security, in whole or in part.

Why is our burgeoning coalition important? Just this year, President Obama created the bipartisan National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform to address our nation's fiscal challenges. The Commission is charged with identifying policies to improve the fiscal situation in the medium term and to achieve fiscal sustainability over the long run.

Unfortunately, some members on the commission are trying to raise the retirement age and cut Social Security benefits for those most in need. We’re fortunate to have both Senator Durbin and Congresswoman Schakowsky from Illinois as leaders on the commission and look to support them in making the right decisions for working families.

We need your help.  Please be part of the solution by endorsing the Illinois Coalition to Strengthen Social Security platform and joining the coalition by filling out the following endorsement form. We look forward to working with you on this all too urgent issue. Please see www.strengthensocialsecurity.org for more information.
