Rep. Jackson Opposes Closing Tinley Park Mental Health Center

Congressman Jesse L. Jackson Jr. today asked Illinois Governor Pat Quinn to delay closing the Tinley Park Mental Health Center and instead urged the governor to look for alternatives to keep all or part of the hospital open for business.

In a letter to the governor, Jackson wrote "to express my deep concerns about plans to close the Tinley Park Mental Health Center and to sell the land to private investors.  My concerns are shared by AFSCME, Citizen Action, and many others.

"The Tinley Park Mental Health Center is a valuable and necessary asset to the Chicago Southland.  No health care facility in the area provides such extensive services to individuals who may pose a threat to themselves or society. The majority of its patients are low-income, lack health insurance, and are minorities who have few options for care if this Center were to close.

"In addition to the excellent health benefits the hospital provides to patients and their families, the Center also employs many of my constituents.  The loss of those jobs would have devastating consequences on these employees and their families," the congressman wrote.

"I implore you to search for alternatives that will provide health care services to needy people even while recognizing the tough economic times we live in. I remain hopeful that a compromise can be reached that would allow some or all of the Tinley Park Mental Health Center to remain open. Thus, I strongly urge you to reconsider its closure." Jackson concluded.

Published reports claim that as early as this week Gov. Quinn could announce plans to close the Tinley Pak hospital in a move to reduce state spending.
