Cleaning up the Flyover

Earlier this month, construction began on the "Englewood Flyover." Aimed at solving one of the region's worst rail bottlenecks, this $133 million bridge construction project, funded largely by federal transportation dollars, will reduce railroad congestion on Chicago's South Side by carrying three Metra tracks over four freight tracks.

Schakowsky Announces Bill to Create 2.2 Million Jobs

“Emergency Jobs to Restore the American Dream Act” Estimated to Lower Unemployment Rate by 1.3%

 CHICAGO, IL (August 10, 2011) – Today Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), a member of President Obama’s 18-member Fiscal Commission, announced she will introduce the Emergency Jobs to Restore the American Dream Act, a cost-effective plan to put over 2 million people to work for two years.

Enthusiastic Crowd Rallys at Social Security Office to Prevent Cuts


On July 21st, over 150 people gathered outside of the Social Security Main Offices in downtown Chicago to call a stop to the proposed cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security and the Affordable Care Act.  Enthusiastic clergy, senior citizens, disabled Americans, and youth made sure folks in the Social Security offices, as well as the Senatorial offices across the street, heard loud and clear "Hands Off"!

On Friday, June 10th, Representative Schakowsky joined 17 organizations at a meeting sponsored by Citizen Action/Illinois.  The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the current attacks on Social Security and determine what can be done to stop cuts to this and other critical programs including Medicare.

Summer is finally here and with construction season in full effect, it's time for our June Update.

The Clean Construction Act of 2011 is Introduced!

Just last month, Senator Carper (D - DE) introduced the Clean Construction Act of 2011! As we've mentioned, the bill incorporates the use of cleaner construction equipment - such as front-end loaders, diggers, and earth movers - on federally-funded transportation projects in particulate matter non-attainment areas.

Who will pick up Oak Forest patients?



Religious leaders, community members, organized labor, nurses and patients continue to call on County President Preckwinkle to stop the closure of Oak Forest Hospital on May 31st and work with the community to develop a plan that improves health care for southern Cook County.
