Blog: Citizen Action/Illinois Endorsed Candidate Highlight

Citizen Action/Illinois is proud to endorse candidates in the upcoming municipal elections across the state who support quality public education, strong local services, and inclusive, community-driven leadership.

As a statewide progressive organization, we know the importance of local elections in shaping our communities’ futures. This builds on our endorsements from the last municipal cycle, where we supported candidates in races such as school boards and library boards in suburban districts.

Below are highlights of three candidates we have endorsed:

Stefanie McCleish – Endorsed For Summit Hill School Board

As an educator, mom, and community member, Stefanie McCleish is deeply committed to fostering a robust public education system. "Protecting public education has never been more important," Stefanie emphasizes. "Teachers deserve autonomy, support, and appropriate compensation for their work, and we must ensure our students feel safe and supported to thrive in their learning environment."

Her work as a school board member has been driven by a dedication to amplifying community voices, supporting teachers, and prioritizing student well-being. “Our teachers’ working conditions are our students’ learning conditions. In order to see our students excel, we must support our educators.” Stefanie's initiatives include introducing student board members and focusing on data-driven curriculum improvements to elevate students’ educational experiences.

Vance D. Wyatt – Endorsed for Commissioner of Foss Park District & City Treasurer of North Chicago

Since being elected in 2019, Vance D. Wyatt has prioritized the expansion and redevelopment of parks to enrich the North Chicago community. By the end of 2024, they redeveloped four parks and opened a brand-new one. Looking ahead, Vance aims to further increase the number of parks, including a dedicated space designed for individuals with developmental disabilities. "Parks are vital to building strong, vibrant communities," he emphasizes. "They provide safe spaces for recreation, connection, and inclusion for all residents."

As City Treasurer, Vance will collaborate with North Chicago School District 187 to make personal finance education a mandatory part of the student curriculum. "Financial literacy is a lifelong skill that can transform lives and communities," Vance notes. His vision also includes launching a Saving Initiative, modeled after Chicago’s program, to instill a culture of financial responsibility among youth and adults. "Too many families are unable to weather a $400 emergency. This program is about preparing our community for a stable and successful future."

Kelly Maron Horvath – Endorsed for Maine Township Trustee

Kelly Maron Horvath believes in the transformative power of local government. Her journey began with grassroots advocacy and has evolved into a career dedicated to expanding access to essential services like mental health support, food assistance, and youth programs in Maine Township.

"I’m running for reelection to continue strengthening our community and ensuring everyone feels welcome and supported," Kelly shares. She has spearheaded cultural events, LGBTQ+ support programs, and initiatives to enhance services for unincorporated areas—the largest in Illinois. Her work exemplifies a commitment to inclusivity and making sure every resident has access to the resources they need.

These are just a few of the incredible candidates we’ve endorsed this cycle. Stay tuned as we continue to highlight more progressive leaders working to make a difference in their communities.
