Setting the Record Straight: How the One Big Beautiful Bill Act Will Rip Away Healthcare from Millions of Eligible Americans
The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates that around 10 million people will lose coverage under the new law, including an estimated 498,674 Illinoisans.
MYTH: “The One Big Beautiful Bill addresses waste, fraud, and abuse.”
FACT: OBBBA slashes healthcare and food aid for millions to give massive tax breaks to billionaires.
MYTH: “People on Medicaid don’t want to work.”
FACT: 92% of Medicaid recipients who can work already do. The OBBBA will terminate healthcare from more than 2.6 million adults with disabilities who are waiting for federal disability determinations or who are ineligible, not because they don’t have a disability but because of the complex web of rules and limitations of those programs, as well as older women caring for family, and rural residents with no way to get to a job — putting their lives at risk, all to hand tax breaks to billionaires and large corporations.
MYTH: “This will save taxpayers money.”
FACT: The opposite: costs shift to ERs, premiums rise, and disease spreads when people lose coverage.
MYTH: “Only non-citizens are affected.”
FACT: Undocumented immigrants do not receive federal Medicaid. Nearly 500,000 Illinoisans — mostly U.S. citizens — will lose coverage. When Arkansas implemented a similar paperwork requirement policy, thousands of eligible people — including disabled residents — lost coverage within months, with zero gain in employment. 93 nursing homes and 9 rural hospitals in Illinois are at risk of closure due to the massive cuts in the OBBBA.
