Blog: Citizen Action/Illinois Endorsed Candidate Highlight Part 4
Citizen Action/Illinois is proud to endorse candidates in the upcoming municipal elections across the state who support quality public education, strong local services, and inclusive, community-driven leadership.
As a statewide progressive organization, we know the importance of local elections in shaping our communities’ futures. This builds on our endorsements from the last municipal cycle, where we supported candidates in races such as school boards and library boards in suburban districts.
Below are highlights of three candidates we have endorsed:
Leslie Smogor-Yorkville School Board
Leslie Smogor is running for re-election to the Yorkville School Board. “As a parent with one child currently enrolled and another who recently graduated, I’ve seen the impact a strong, student-focused district can have,” Leslie shares.
Over the past two years, Leslie has championed initiatives that prioritize student success, foster open communication, and ensure educators have the resources they need to thrive. “No two students are the same, and our schools must offer diverse opportunities—whether that’s college, trade schools, or entering the workforce—to help every student find their path to success.”
Leslie is committed to strengthening the district’s inclusive culture, listening to teachers and staff, and collaborating on a strategic plan that reflects the community’s mission and vision for the future.
Nicholas Scipione-Schaumburg School Board
Nicholas Scipione has been a member of the Schaumburg School Board for the past 6 years. “As the only current parent on the Board, I have the unique perspective of how the Board’s policy decisions impact students and families. Also, as the only current educator on the Board, I will continue to offer a perspective of how the Board’s policy decisions impact teaching and learning.”
Some of Nicholas’s priorities as a Board Member include: to advocate for learning experiences that are comprehensive, and equitable, and to ensure our students and staff are safe and secure every day they come to our buildings. “As a Board Member for the last 6 years, it has been my pleasure to advocate for the students, staff, and community of District 54. I am running to ensure we keep District 54 a premier educational institution in our state.”
Kim Stone- Councilmember, City of Highland Park
“I am running for re-election to the Highland Park City Council because I care deeply about this community and want to continue the progress we’ve made together.” As a lifelong Highland Park resident, Kim Stone is committed to ensuring the city remains financially strong, environmentally responsible, and a great place for people of all ages to live and thrive. During her time on the Council, the city has invested in infrastructure and a more vibrant downtown.
“I have led efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, expand renewable energy options, and strengthen affordable housing policies—because I believe that sustainability and smart growth go hand in hand.” Climate action remains one of Kim’s top priorities. “As a locally elected official, making thoughtful, forward-looking decisions that protect what makes Highland Park special while preparing for the future is a responsibility I will continue to take seriously if re-elected.”
